Endgame study (1)

An endgame study from 1921 by Leonid Kubbel.

White to move and draw.

Solution:

1.Nd4!!

With 1.Nd4!! the threat is both 2.Re6 and 2.Ra3+ Kb7 3.Rb3.
1.Re6 Qxe6 doesn't work for white since 2.Nc5+ is impossible to play.

1...Qxd4

Or 1...Qd8 2.Ra3+ Kb7 3.Rb3+ Kc8 (Not 3...Kc7?? 4.Ne6+ and 5.Nxd8 winning) 4.Rb8+! Kxb8 5.Nc6+ Kc7 6.Nxd8 Kxd8 and draw.

2.Ra3+ Kb5 3.Rb3+ Kc4 4.Rc3+ Kd5 5.Rd3! Qxd3 and draw since it is stalemate.

About me

I played my first chess game in December 1977 and was lucky to hold draw. I continued to play chess and joined a chess club in September 1978. I'm still enjoying playing chess. I like to do many other things than playing chess. Long walks, some jogging, cycling, reading books, listen to music, watch movies, writing and much more. Life is fun!
